Hum & The Life and Times

Well… I spent New Years Day in style… bummed around watching a crapload of 30 Rock episodes (Kelly and I are a little late to the party with this show, but after seeing most of season 1, I’m quite enjoying it), and then off to Double Door for the 2nd of a two-night stand with Dianogah, The Life and Times and Hum. As you may or may not know, Hum hasn’t played much the past eight years, so this was a pretty big treat for me and a few friends.

I know ahead of time the show was sold out, and I’d swear I’ve been to a few sold out shows at DD before, but this show was SOLD the fuck OUT. Jam-packed, butts to nuts, sold out (rightfully so, I suppose, but still…). Anyways, I’d never seen Dianogah before, though apparently they’ve been around for almost 14 years. Good stuff (as I’m a sucker for bands with two bass players) though I definitely leaned towards the more aggressive 90s-sounding material.

TLAT were great as usual, though the sound was a little over-driven for my tastes. If you haven’t seen/heard them before, I’d highly recommend. Their new album Tragic Boogie comes out in April, and is already guaranteed to be in my top 3 of the year.

Hum hit the stage after and obnoxiously long set change, and simply destroyed the place. I haven’t seen them since the ELVi played a show with them back in March of 98, an they sounded as good or better than before. Extremely tight and crushingly heavy. Simply an amazing set. Isle of the Cheetah, The Pod & Iron Clad Lou were the first three songs, and they all were spot on. Despite the bulging crowds and my sore feet, an amazing show through and through.

Here’s a little taste for anyone not in the know…

TLAT – “My Last Hostage”

Hum – “The Pod”
